Description of course
Palliative Care (Day 1) (Delivered/Led by Yvonne Gray)
The day is an introductory day which covers 4 x main areas of discussion.
1 – What is Palliative Care?
2 – Who is Palliative care for and when is someone deemed as needing Palliative Care, also illness trajectories from the point of diagnosis.
3 – The importance of communication between the individual, family and those involved in the wider caring team and
4 – Looking After Yourself, the emotional and behavioural effects of working in Palliative Care. .
The day uses presentations, discussion, activities and case studies to help develop understanding.
Who is it for?
All care staff working in care homes or across the community and are involved with supporting Palliative Care
What will I learn?
This is an introduction to Palliative care which will help you to identify what is meant by the term Palliative Care, who may be involved in meeting someone’s care needs and identifying your own values and concerns in relation to supporting individuals with complex needs and different illness.

DAY 2

Description of course
Palliative Care (Day 2) (Delivered by the MacMillan Nurse Practice Educators, Cornhill)
This day builds on the learning from Day 1 and looks at the impact of different illnesses on individual’s needs, the medications often prescribed and their effects. Loss, Grief & Bereavement.
Who is it for?
Aimed at staff who have attended Day 1 or other foundation/introductory Palliative Care training.
What will I learn?
You will learn what signs to look for which may indicate a change in individuals’ support needs/health. The effects/side effects of common medication prescribed.
